Respiratory Issues

Parrots have an extremely sensitve respiratory system and things that most people would not expect to harm a bird could cause long term illness or sudden death.

  • Telfon cooking pans as well as all other non-stick pans can be deadly to parrots. The fumes when a pan is over heated is deadly to birds and can cause flu-like symptoms in humans. http://hubpages.com/_lsz5sfvnthj8/hub/Bird_Safe
  • Candles and air fresheners can have long term effects on parrots as the release of waxes and oils can cause lung and bronchial issues.
  • Cleaning chemicals should not be used with birds present. Many birds have died due to the use of Areosol sprays. The best items to use for cleaning is water and vinegar or some dish soap. Please make sure that once cleaned, thorough rinsing takes place. I also use a 5% bleach 95% water solution in a hand spray bottle for cage cleaning. However the birds are not present during this cleaning.
  • Scotchguard is deadly to birds. In the event of new carpeting or furniture, the items should be aired out for several days before being placed in the house with your birds. Never should anything be scotchguarded in your bird area.
  • Paints - only baby safe paints should be used and birds should be kept as far away as possible until fumes disipate.
